English language service providers were elected by the provincial government to enhance their childcare service to support young children and families integrate into a new culture and learning environment. Burnaby Family Life in partnership with Burnaby School District Continuing Education was one of the selected childcare providers for this pilot service. The childcare service has therefore become more than just a support for the participation of parents in English classes; it has become an integral part of the ELSA program with activities geared toward specific outcomes for both children and parents. The service promotes the social, emotional, language and cognitive development of young children from immigrant families. The service also provides opportunities for immigrant ESL parents to obtain social and emotional support in child rearing in a new cultural context and to learn effective strategies that support early learning and development.
Children are referred to the program by Burnaby School District Continuing Education with specific funding from the Ministry of Advanced Education and Labour Market Development Immigrant Integration Branch. ELSA Enhanced Childcare is delivered by Burnaby Family Life at four locations: North Burnaby and Riverway West Education Centres, Burnaby South Secondary School East POD and Morley Elementary School.
